Type: Pyritized Ammonites Enhancement: None - 100% natural Origin: Russia Price: $15-$100 per stone Ammonites appeared during the Carboniferous period a mere 290 to 354 million years ago. Evolving during the Mesozoic era into specimens sometimes weighing more than 200 lbs., they became very widespread until dying out about the same time as the dinosaurs. Today the best Ammonites are found on the banks of the Volga River near the Russian city of Ulyanovsk (formerly Simbirsk and the birthplace of Lenin). These stunning cabochons are the result of Pyrite replacing the original bone structure of the Ammonite. There are various shades of brown, beige, black, tan and white. Throughout many of the pieces are swirls and pockets of Pyrite drusy. (Return to Top)
